Treatment: If a pancreatic or liver tumor is identified and able to be surgically excised, the skin lesions may normalize for an extended period of time, but because these tumors metastasize (spread to other areas of the body) quickly, surgery is not curative. In cases of end stage liver disease, surgery is not possible, and the goal of therapy is to increase quality of life and decrease uncomfortable skin lesions with supportive care and addressing the nutritional abnormalities. Supportive care includes supplementing protein and necessary minerals and enzymes through the diet and oral supplements or by weekly intravenous amino acid infusions that are performed in the hospital on an outpatient basis until improvement in the skin is noted. While yucca is definitely a safer alternative to synthetic steroids, it should be used in moderation. It should be used to treat a specific condition rather than for everyday, regular use. If it needs to be used over a longer timeframe, make sure to give your dog a couple of days off every week from yucca. Too much yucca can irritate the digestive tract and may reverse its benefits, according to Herbs for Pets. ( Dosing for the dried and powdered root is a 1/2 teaspoon per pound of food. But check with your holistic vet if you are ever unsure.)

Another side effect that is occasionally seen in dogs taking steroids for various health concerns is changes in behavior. It's not uncommon to see your pet become suddenly more aggressive or anxious after giving him steroids. Dogs that were otherwise very mild mannered and well behaved may begin to run around or bark. In more extreme cases, you may need to be careful about the possibility of your dog biting or harming someone. Mood changes can also make your pet more sedate and depressed as well, so it's important to also be on the lookout for other types of adjustments in behavior.

Glucocorticoids mediate their effects through various mechanisms, the most important of which seems to be through modulation of gene transcription. Glucocorticoids, like thyroid hormones, can enter the nucleus and access the DNA. Certain genes in the DNA carry regions known as glucocorticoid response elements (GREs). Binding of GREs by a glucocorticoid can result in either an increase or decrease in gene transcription and subsequent protein production. 1,2 Glucocorticoids also can interfere with the ability of other factors that regulate gene transcription ( Figure 1 ). 2 Because glucocorticoids can induce the production of new proteins, the effects of these drugs, or biologic half-life, can persist beyond their pharmacokinetic half-life. 1,2
